Why every business needs a website

Just because a business has a great product or service doesn’t mean the business will be successful.

Juris Website Design cartoon bridging the gap between a customer and business

The business has to be able to reach the right customers. A website is a fundamental marketing tool used to bridge the gap between the business and their ideal customers.

Having a website will allow a business to attract more customers and increase sales.

The 5 values a website brings to a business:

  • provides an easy opportunity to buy
  • shows the value of the service or product
  • answers common questions using FAQ
  • enables an easy way for people to contact the business
  • increases credibility and trust – if there is no trust customers won’t buy

Web designer problem solver

Business owners may have one of these three problems, or possibly another problem you would like to solve:

  • more sales
  • communicating what you offer
  • look better than their competitors

I am offering my services as a problem solver for business owners by building a functional website for your business.

Think of a website as your store window, like Macy’s, people can see what you offer when they walk by your store. You may also think of your website as a brochure with information about your products and services.

The content on a website is static, which means it doesn’t change often. It should be streamlined and informative and arranged in a way that allows your visitors to find what they are looking for quickly.

How much does a small business website cost?

There are numerous factors that a website designer uses to determine the price he or she will charge to create a small business website.

The price for a five page handyman services website will likely be lower than the price to create a website for a professional such as an attorney, chiropractor, or dentist. In general, the price I charge to create a new five page, non ecommerce website can range from $1,500 to $5,000, depending on the site requirements.

If you don’t have a website you are probably leaving a bunch of money on the table.

Call Jim Juris today at 303-781-2901 or email Jim at [email protected] for more information about having a website created for your Colorado company.

You only get one chance to make a good first impression on your website visitors

If your website does not make a good first impression on your visitors within the first five to ten seconds they will leave and they may never return.

Your website content should clearly communicate to your audience what it is that you have to offer, be it a product or a service.

Think about the people you serve. The primary focus of your website should not be focused on you. The website content should speak directly to your ideal customers.

Talk to them about how the product(s) or services you provide can solve their problem. If your website does not deliver the right message to your potential customers they won’t buy.

The most important real estate for a website is the area above the fold

Juris Website Design illustration of a newspaper folded in half

When people buy a home there are some things they look for. For example, a young couple may want to live close to work in order to cut down on commute time and live in a nice area with good schools.

When it comes to the most important real estate area on a website, it is the area visitors can see without scrolling which is also referred to as above the fold.

Above the fold refers to the area of a newspaper on a newsstand a person can see without unfolding the newspaper.

For a lot of websites that typically is the banner. If all your visitors see above the fold on your website is an image of your office you may not be making a good first impression on your website visitors. This could mean they leave without scrolling.

I have also seen website banners where the image file size is so huge the website takes five to fifteen seconds for the page to load. Most people won’t want to stick around that long.

All of my image file sizes are extremely small because I compress all of the images. I also compress all images for my website design clients. Images should be in focus. Nobody wants to look at an image that is pixelated.

The amount of time a web page takes to load is a ranking factor for Google search engine optimization, also referred to as SEO.

Headings are extremely important when it comes to website search engine optimization, SEO.

There are six classes of headings, H1, H2, H3, H4, H5 and H6. The H1 heading is the most important heading on your website. It should only be used once on each web page.

An H1 heading may use a font size of 40 pixels and an H6 heading may use a font size of 12 pixels. Those numbers are not written in stone, just as examples.

Think of the H1 heading as the main heading you see at the top of a newspaper. The purpose of the main heading of a newspaper is to sell newspapers. It appears at the top of the front page of a newspaper and it has the largest size text.

The H2 heading is used to reinforce the main heading. It is slightly smaller than the H1 heading and it usually appears below the main heading.

The H3 heading is a subheading. It is used as the heading for a story in newspapers. It is somewhat smaller in size than the H2 heading.

The H4, H5 and H6 headings are not used too much in website design. They have less relevance compared to the H1, H2 and H3 headings on websites and they are smaller in size than an H3 heading.

I also bold text to make it easier for people to see when skimming web pages.

The word “WELCOME” should never be used in a heading. I have seen “welcome to my site” used as the main heading on numerous websites. Nobody ever ever searches for “welcome” when they are searching for a product or service on Google unless they are searching for a doormat with the word “welcome” printed on it.

Useful Content

The days when you could have a website rank well in the search engines such as Google and Bing with just a small amount of relevant and useful content are over. In other words, having a chance for a web page to rank anywhere on the first page of Google with just 300 words of content is long gone.

Google wants to see web page content that is going to be considered as authoritative in order for the page to rank well. That will likely mean web pages that have around two to three thousand words.

I was just reading a blog post and I did not have a good user experience. The font was too small and the font color was a medium gray, making it hard for me to read. In other words, the website was not visually appealing.

I make sure that every website that I build uses a large font size and font colors that have good contrast with the background color so the content on the page is easy to read.

ADA Compliance

The Americans With Disability Act requires you to have a website that visually impaired people can access. Visually impaired people surf the web too. Failure to comply with the ADA could get you into legal trouble and you could get sued.

Alternative text or what I refer to as the “alt tag” should be used with every image you upload and place on your website. This is what screen readers will read to the visually impaired person so they can get an idea what the image is instead of the screen reader saying “image”.

For example, the alt text for a photo of a German Shepherd puppy could simply say “German Shepherd puppy”. This will help provide the visually impaired person with a better idea about the image on the web page.

That is just one of many requirements your website needs in order to confirm with the ADA.

Is the content readable on smartphones?

Juris Website Design simulated view of a web page when viewed using a smartphone

Roughly 50% of your visitors will come from mobile device users. That is why I design websites with mobile users in mind.

Think of white space as the area you see between paragraphs. Ideally, when you are looking at a website on your smartphone you want to see short paragraphs of text rather than seeing a solid wall of text.

Nobody wants to read 500 words or more of text on a smartphone which does not have plenty of white space. It will not be a good user experience.

The screenshot on the left is a simulation of what a website visitor would see on this website’s Home page if they were using a smartphone.

Of course, your smartphone may show something a little bit different.

You see short paragraphs of text and plenty of white space in the screenshot rather than a wall of nothing but solid text covering the entire viewing area on your phone.

You also see text that is easy to read.

Why every small business in Colorado needs a mobile responsive website

Although your business may be doing very well today, nobody knows what tomorrow will bring. Every business, no matter what market or industry it is in, needs a website in order to stay competitive, attract new customers and grow.

Potential customers will visit a website for two reasons:

  • to search for answers to their questions or problems
  • To learn more about the products and services a business provides

Having an affordable website created for your business will allow your business to do the following:

  • communicate with customers
  • earn trust and build credibility
  • generate leads and online sales
  • provide important information about your business
  • attract new customers who are searching for a local business similar to yours
  • provide potential customers with reasons why their business is different than the competition

Building your own website like you see advertised on TV requires you to have time, patience, knowledge and interest. Those are things most businesses don’t have when it comes to creating a website for their own small business.

Small businesses that attempt to build a website themselves quickly discover how difficult and time consuming it can be.
