I moved from the San Francisco Bay area 21 years ago to Englewood, Colorado. Looking back at my decision to move here I feel I made a smart move.
Englewood is a suburb of Denver, and it is surrounded by Lakewood, Littleton, and Greenwood Village. It borders the southern edge of Denver, the mile high city, which is only about 1 1/2 miles away. Littleton is also about 1 1/2 miles away from where I live in Englewood, when traveling south from Denver.
You will find a number of restaurants and bars located along Broadway and in other locations throughout the city. Englewood also has two large grocery stores and a big box store that also sells groceries.
Other cities near Englewood are Golden, Highlands Ranch, Aurora and Centennial. DTC is also close by. A little further away are Boulder and Aspin.
Buckley Air Force Base is located in Aurora and there is a VA Hospital in Denver for veterans.
If you are like me, and you don’t own a car it is pretty easy to get around on RTD busses and/or the light rail system. Public transit is very economical, especially with the high price for gas. Going one way on the bus is only $1.50 and you can get a three hour bus transfer.
For me, I prefer to walk to as many places as possible, for better health. I even walk during the winter months when it is bitter cold outside.
Englewood also has the Broken Tee golf course and driving range. It is a par-3, 18-hole course. There is also the Englewood Recreation Center. There are also a number of parks here.
I am fortunate enough to be able to walk to the post office and also to the grocery store, which are both located on Broadway, one mile from where I live.
For those 55 and older there is the Malley Recreation Center located in downtown Englewood.
I consider health care to be great here. Englewood has two hospitals, Craig Hospital and Swedish Medical Center and a number of urgent care centers.
Both Englewood and Denver have great public libraries. The Englewood library is also about one mile away from where I live.
Because I came to Englewood from California when I was in my late 40s I did not attend public school here. Because of this, I don’t feel that I can give you an honest opinion of the public school system in Englewood.
There are a number of colleges and universities in and around Denver.
If you happen to own a car there are a lot of businesses that are located along the Broadway corridor that runs from Highlands Ranch, through Littleton, Englewood all the way to the capital in downtown Denver.
Call 303-299-6000 for more information about the RTD bus and light rail service routes and hours of operation.
Some of the attractions around the area are the Denver Zoo, Denver Museum of Nature and Science, Denver Aquarium, Sloan Lake and the Rocky Mountains, which have some of the best ski resorts in the world. The Denver Mint is also located in downtown Denver.
Of course you also have all of the businesses located along the 16th Street Mall in downtown Denver. This is where you can find numerous places to shop, dine and take in a movie.
I don’t know about now, but, before the pandemic you would find numerous street artists performing up and down the mall.
Union Station is also in downtown Denver, at the end of the 16th Street Mall.
No vehicles, except for emergency and service vehicles, are allowed on the 16th Street Mall. Although you may want to walk the entire length of the mall, however, because it is quite a long walk, I recommend taking the free 16th Street Mall shuttle bus that runs the entire length of the 16th Street Mall. It is very convenient to ride because it stops at just about every corner along the mall.
There are lots of sporting events held in Denver too. You have football, baseball, ice hockey and basketball.
Not everything is perfect in the Denver metro area. Some of the areas in and around Denver have a large homeless population as well as crime.
From what I can tell, the Denver Rescue Mission does a good job helping to care for the needy.
There is also the high cost of living here due to all of the people moving here for the high paying technology jobs.
You are not likely to find a one bedroom apartment under $1,000 in most places in the Denver metro area, and that price is on the low end. A more realistic number is somewhere around $1,250 due to a lack of housing and a large number of people moving into this area.
Homes sell here very quickly too and they are not cheap. We are talking about $200,000+ in Englewood, and that is for a small home.
The weather is good here much of the year, but the temperature can range anywhere from 100+ F in the summer time to -10 F in the winter.
Normally, there are only a few days where the temperature reaches 100 degrees and above, but there are a number of days where the temperature falls below zero, during the day, in the winter months.
As long as you don’t mind the cold weather in the winter time and you can afford to live here I would say that Denver is one of the best places to live in the state of Colorado and in the entire country.
